I absolutely love being an editor. The good, the bad and the ugly. I love being exposed to diverse voices and ideas. To network with writers and other editors, and help shape great content.

As an editor, you get to do a lot of reading and offer suggestions with a fresh pair of eyes. Of course, we can all agree feedback is subjective. Writers may or may not appreciate your input, but when you decide to submit to a publication, you accept that feedback is an inevitable part of the revising and publishing process.

Both writers and editors need to develop a thick skin. Although most of the time, the collaboration is smooth and constructive for all parties involved, sometimes it goes amusingly wrong.

Here’s a short compilation of my favorite PMs I’ve received over the years. All based on true events!

“Thanks, but I know what I’m doing”

This is a classic. We could even call it the “age-old writer-editor power struggle.” Hemingway wouldn’t have been Hemingway without Gertrude Stein’s edits, though.

“Edits? What edits? I don’t see any changes in the article”
