When editors leave writers speechless

My post “When Writers Leave Editors Speechless” is one of the most read stories I have ever published. I wasn’t expecting such a response — but it seems that many of you found it relatable. How could I resist writing part two of the writer-editor saga?

We editors are flawed human beings with sometimes very unrealistic expectations. We make up a lot of BS. I think it’s only fair that we call ourselves out and let writers know they’re not crazy.

Without further ado, here are some of the edits we ask for that are completely absurd, but hey, it comes with the job:

“I question the accuracy of your claim that water is wet. Can you provide evidence?”

I mean, listen, guys. The scientific community is divided on this issue. Some argue that water is only wet when it comes into contact with a dry surface — so can you really blame us for asking you to quote a peer-reviewed study from the last decade to prove it?

“This is too specific. Can you make it relatable to everyone on Earth?”
